There’s a whole quiz archive on the Jack Kilby Science Quiz, thanks to Prateek Vijayavargia; unfortunately I haven’t edited it yet. So for all those people going tomorrow for this year’s edition, here are some sample questions which might help you. These are from the organisers’ themselves (I think).

  1. Although we associate Vatican with religion, it also owns a couple of fine observatories. There is one observatory in the papal summer residence. It was built to aid the development of what? The Gregorian Calendar
  2. Before calculating machines became popular, in large engineering activities, women were employed to manually do the calculations. What were these ladies called? Computers
  3. Mho is the unit of measurement of reciprocal of what? Ohm (resistance or impedance)
  4. The word describes the whorl of petals in a flower. It comes from the Latin word for crown and is now well known because of a very popular model of car. What word? Corolla
  5. This is the thin, transparent tissue that covers the outer surface of the eye. More known because of the itching ailment that affects it. What is the tissue called? Conjunctiva

Really neat questions…and even a hardly-a-quizzer person like me can see that.I feel sorry that I never took GK quizzing seriously when I had a chance.Found it too boring when I was younger.Guess they didn’t know how to make interesting questions like these back then.

    Hi Ankur
I am a class X student of Springdales School Dhaula Kuan. I am a regular visitor of your amazing blog. I am going for Jack Kilby quiz (18.10.08) and would want some tips from you or the 2007 archive if you can compile it.
I had missed last years quiz but i have the 2006 archive and sample questions. Also if you could tell me the qualifying score in prelims in 2006

@Sarthak: Thanks for the feedback! :) Uh, unfortunately I don’t have the archive for the 2007 edition of the quiz. I’m not sure of the qualifying score, but given the paper, it would be pretty high. Since the prelims were so easy, the margin of difference between the score of teams who qualify would be low. Say in this 30 question quiz, I would expect the cutoff to be 23-24 or higher.

@Agrim: Ooh, that’s a really close quiz. Must hurt real bad to miss out on all those goodies by a whisker. Never mind, well done on a good performance, and sure hope the experience you gained helps you in the future.

BTW, what was the scoring system like? 1-2 mark questions seem weird…

oh yes…forgot to tell you the marking system! sorry coz u asked abt it a loong time back. anyways, the marking system was weird coz it included marks from the written. so missing out easy ones in the written cost us a good position….:P
